A scary reality

This month I had a very scary reality moment hit me.  Last week I had a very sensitive lump show up in my left breast.  I didn't freak out because I know that statistics are in my favor for it to be nothing.  However, I also know that with my family history that I should take it seriously. (My mother died at 35 from breast cancer.) I called my doctor to have it checked out.  I honestly thought she would complete the exam and send me home because I was just over reacting, but the opposite happened.  She was very concerned because the mass had an odd shape, was hard to move around, and was much bigger than a common 1cm cyst.  She sent me in for a mammogram and ultrasound immediately.  She also wanted me to make an appointment with a breast surgeon.  I still wasn't crazy nervous because I know that breast cancer usually doesn't have any pain associated with it.  I've also had the genetic analysis done to check for the BRCA gene, and I tested negative.  That doesn't mean that it won't happen, but it dramatically decreases my chances.  I was a little nervous when I went in on Friday for the mammogram and ultrasound.  My friend, Katie, works at the Breast Center, and she took extra great care of me.  She completed my mammogram and sent me to the ultrasound room.  When the tech put the wand on me the first thing she said was, "Oh my goodness!"  I'm sure I gave her a crazy look because she immediately looked at me and said, "This is the biggest cluster of cysts I've ever seen!"  I could breathe a little easier when she said they we just cysts from her view point.  She did have to measure every cyst she found.  As you can tell from the pictures below, she was very busy for the next 45 minutes.  I do know that most women don't have this many fibroid cysts.  The breast doctor talked to me afterwards.  She does want me to keep my follow up appointment with the breast surgeon later this week, but she doesn't see anything to be concerned with at this time.  I will have to go back in 3-4 months to have more images taken to compare the sizes.  I'm very thankful that I can relax a little for now.  Ladies, it's very important to complete your monthly self exams!

I think these images are disgusting!  I think mainly they gross me out because I think of the cysts as little invaders that I can't do anything about.  Every little black spot in the pictures is a cyst.  Yuck!

The cluster that was causing the pain.
